Although classically trained and primarily a figurative painter, Ruth started to experiment with landscapes when she first visited Italy on a traveling grant in 2001. Several years later and still incessant in her search for color and light, Maui was added to her small and serene paintings of land and sky. These works give the viewer a small glimpse in to the wide open skies and terrain of these two beautiful environments. An almost consistent composition in these works depicts the vibrant colors of the late evening light that bathes the sky and limits the land to a small sliver of shadows at the bottom of the composition.
Ruth also returned to the figure in a series title "The Dream Series," a collection of drawing, painting and digitally altered photography. They explore dreaming as a neurological, physiological and physical active state. The figures linger between representation and abstraction in these multi-layered images capturing the restlessness and activity without sacrificing the feeling of peace and tranquility.
Currently Ruth resides in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She is concentrating on a new body of work and will be updating the website soon.
Ruth taught at the Kentuck Museum Association and the Jack Warner Institute during her first two years in Alabama and is now concentrating on her own work and teaching privately. You may contact her directly for more information on private sessions and commissions.
