Although classically trained and primarily a figurative painter, Ruth started to experiment with landscapes when she first visited Italy on a traveling grant in 2001. Several years later and still incessant in her search for color and light, Maui was added to her small and serene paintings of land and sky. These works give the viewer a small glimpse in to the wide open skies and terrain of these two beautiful environments. An almost consistent composition in these works depicts the vibrant colors of the late evening light that bathes the sky and limits the land to a small sliver of shadows at the bottom of the composition.
Ruth also returned to the figure in a series title "The Dream Series," a collection of drawing, painting and digitally altered photography. They explore dreaming as a neurological, physiological and physical active state. The figures linger between representation and abstraction in these multi-layered images capturing the restlessness and activity without sacrificing the feeling of peace and tranquility.
Currently, Ruth resides in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and is active in several community projects, in addition to returning to her work in arts education. Since 2018, she has been working under a state grant focusing on Arts Integration in city and county schools and also teaches privately.
Ruth co-founded O'Connor Art Studios, LLC in 2013 with the vision of combining a top-notch working studio and a space that also serves the local community. Having created a very unique establishment, centrally located in downtown, O'Connor Art Studios grew to much success. Ruth ran all educational programs and special events, along with developing a homeschooling art curriculum serving the local community.
